FinLit

The Overview

Choose a learning focus area, and be immersed in engaging personal finance lessons that build confidence through solving puzzles and scenario-based problems.

As project manager, I led the team of designers as well as user interviewing and usability testing. I created the final mobile prototype including content writing and interaction design.

Understanding Demand and Needs

Understanding Demand and Needs

User Research Goal

Discover the subjects in personal finance that intrigue users, and methods for effectively delivering them.

Semi-Structured 1-on-1 User Interviews

Our team began by conducting user interviews on Zoom in order to understand users’ learning experiences in personal finance. We also wanted to learn about their financial goals and experiences with education apps. After the first round of card sorting users' responses, we translated them into categories that outline user preferences and restrictions.

Analyzing Financial and Education Apps

Our team explored apps like Khan Academy and Mindpal to investigate how they present content. We looked at how they structured lessons i.e. chronologically in Duolingo and by topic in Khan Academy.

Iterating and Testing the System Architecture

Iterating and Testing the System Architecture

Guerrilla Usability Testing our First Lo-fi Iteration

Our team conducted 5 usability tests with users of different ages, in order to observe where there is friction in completing a module. We prompted users to find key pages like 'Discover', and to successfully navigate through an entire learning topic to the point of the quiz.

Users want a clear, broad view of the learning path. Where are we starting? Where are we going?

1

Profiling questions have less room for variables. This makes it easier to assign users a focus area.

2

Ultimately, we removed questions altogether to ease the process and give users the option to choose a path.

3

Users expressed desire for a breakdown of the content within focus areas.

Ideating the Module Dashboard Page

1

The profile icon used to be at the top of the dashboard, but was moved to the nav bar to replace 'Wallet'.

2

We more clearly defined where the user is in the focus area using a breadcrumb trail.

3

The profile icon was replaced with a progress meter to motivate users throughout the module.

4

Placing the module title in the center and in larger text makes it clear this is the module's dashboard.

5

'Wallet' and 'Leaderboard' were replaced with 'Focus Areas' and 'Profile' in the nav bar.

Reflection

FinLit could be further developed with elements of animation, illustrated characters, and more types of games. We managed to avoid scope creep and produce a complete prototype for mobile and desktop. I'm proud of our decision to utilize guerrilla testing given our three week timeline.
